  1. I’m fascinated by how Abraham interacts with God. He’s polite and deferential, but he has no qualms about telling God what he thinks (i.e., “I’m too old to have a child. How shall I know that what you say is true?” or “God, far be it from you to kill the righteous with the unrighteous! Will you spare Sodom and Gomorrah if there are 50 righteous persons?) And the cool thing is that God responds respectfully, treating him as a person whose opinions and feelings are to be considered. It reminds me that we are not puppets or insignificant blips in creation even though we are incredibly small in comparison to God.

I think Jesus’ interactions with his disciples and the people who come to him model that same respect. Even though he knows much, much more than the people around him, he never talks down to them or brushes off honest questions. That doesn’t mean he didn’t get worn or irritated on occasion (i.e., “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” or “Oh faithless and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you?”).

I have to remind myself of these things on a daily basis because it is so easy to feel trapped by my circumstances. But I’m not trapped because I am God’s daughter; he listens to me and answers!
It is a truth I want to grasp more fully.
